Chicago Weather: Polar Vortex in July? 2 days of 'unseasonable cold' possible

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Polar Vortex? Not quite, but Chicago weather is on pace for a cool down next week.

"The jet stream will be buckling unusually far south for mid-July, allowing a cross polar flow of chilly air," ABC7 Meteorologist Mike Caplan said.

Residents won't need boots or shovels, but a sweater may come in handy in the evenings. The July version of the "polar vortex" that brought a deep freeze over Chicago for much of the winter wouldn't involve snow.

And would only last a couple of days.

"Temperatures will be unseasonably cool," Caplan said of next week. "Highs will be hard pressed to hit 70 on Tuesday, and lows will be close to record level."

The cooler temperatures settle in overnight Monday into Tuesday and last through Wednesday night. During that time period, overnight lows could fall into the low 50s. Daytime highs could be in the high 60s.

Temperatures are likely to rebound to more typical July levels by the end of next week, Caplan said.
