CHICAGO (WLS) -- Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible late Wednesday night and overnight to early Thursday morning across the Chicago area.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for the far western suburbs of Chicago, including La Salle, Lee and Ogle counties, until 5 a.m.

A line of possibly severe storms is expected to move through the Chicago area between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m.

ABC7 Meteorologist Jerry Taft says the areas that are the most at-risk will likely be south of I-80, although most of the Chicago area remains at an enhanced risk for severe weather.

Heavy rain and high winds are the primary threats, but hail and even tornadoes cannot be ruled out, Taft said.

WATCH: ABC7 First Alert Weather Forecast

Due to the risk of heavy rains overnight, a flash flood watch has been issued for midnight until 1 p.m. Thursday.

The threat comes as nine tornadoes ripped through north central Illinois Monday, causing major destruction in Coal City and other communities.
