CHICAGO (WLS) -- Dreams of a white Christmas may be all the Chicago area has. While most of the area remains under a winter weather advisory, the amount of snow expected to fall and stick around has diminished.

Much of the area is getting soaked by rain on Wednesday.

"That will be the case for the next several hours and by the time the change to snow happens, the precipitation will have pulled out," ABC7 Meteorologist Phil Schwarz said.

The advisory is in effect until 9PM for Cook, Kankakee and Will counties in Illinois and 10 PM EST for Lake, Newton, Porter, Benton and Jasper counties in Indiana. What changed? The storm moved further east and the cold air is arriving later.

There could still be snow- but on an inch or less is expected in most of the Chicago area.

"The areas most affected will be along the Stevenson Expressway (I-55) and especially east over into northwest Indiana," Schwarz said.
