Spring snow falls on a chilly, wet Thursday

WOODSTOCK, Ill. (WLS) -- A blast of cold and a storm front moving through the Chicago suburbs brought spring snow just in time for the evening commute. There's about an inch of snow tops on the ground in suburbs like Woodstock, a wet snow that's pretty good for snow balls. For the most part snow did not stick to pavement, but there are some icy spots.

Thursday night, Woodstock Square is awash in white, a dusting of snow creating a postcard-perfect scene perhaps better appreciated if it were three days before Christmas instead of three days before Easter.

"No, I don't see any beauty in it. I'm sorry, I don't," laughs Nancy May, a Woodstock resident.

After a rainy day, the snow began as a wintry mix that proved problematic for commuters during the evening rush. As the evening progressed and temperatures dropped, the sleet turned into snow.

In Northwest suburban the snow was sticking to windows and grass, but not pavement.

"A lot of people are driving a little cautiously, so probably a smart thing," said John Quickery, Jr. "It wasn't very nice out there."

"I don't care because I'm leaving for Hawaii tomorrow," said Ericka Henson as she was driving in the snow. "I'm leaving it behind. I think it's a little ridiculous."

Back in Woodstock Square, Nancy May was still scraping her car, but someone had left her a little note of encouragement. Woodstock Square is where "Groundhog's Day" was filmed, and the note perhaps a little message from the groundhog.

"I think so, maybe," May said. "Maybe to hang in there."

Even though the snow isn't sticking to pavement, the McHenry County Sheriff's Department is warning of some icy spots out there. Crashes have been reported, but not in large numbers.
