The wife of a Chicago doctor who died in a van crash in the Philippines was also seriously injured in the incident, her family said.

The couple's three sons are with their mother in the Philippines, while also mourning the loss of their father.

"It's, it's a big void in the family, you know. But it's definitely hard," said Dr. Noel Lasala, brother-in-law.

Lasala said Dr. Nunilo Rubio died doing what he loved.

"Even during his retirement, he would enjoy himself by giving free medical care for people who are in need," Lasala said.

Rubio was killed over the weekend while on a humanitarian mission in the island nation aimed at helping the less fortunate. Police said driver of a van Rubio was riding in fell asleep and slammed into a tree.

Seven people were killed, including Orland Hills nurse Aurora Gagni, and others were injured, including Rubio's wife Elentia. She has endured 13 hours of surgery for a broken pelvis and broken hips.

Elentia was also part of the medical mission.

"So that's always their philosophy, always give back. Both of them love that," Lasala said.

Rubio's legacy is already visible in Chicago. His generosity greatly enhanced access to diabetes care on the city's West Side at Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center.

"He's just a wonderful person, and we'll miss him so much," said Lasala.
