Chicago weather forecast: Strong wind, rain flip small plane in west suburbs; branches down in city

Strong wind, hail possible throughout Thursday

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Storms moved through the Chicago area Thursday afternoon, bringing heavy rain and strong wind gusts.

Some tree branches and power poles were knocked down in Chicago, and a small plane flipped at DuPage Airport, West Chicago fire officials said.

Two people were on the plane that flipped around 4:40 p.m., but were they not injured.

ABC7 Chicago meteorologist Larry Mowry said a wind gust of 55 mph had been recorded at the west suburban airport.

Garfield Ridge residents were left waddling through fallen debris and cleaning up storm damage in parts of the Chicago area.

The windshield of a car was pierced by a fallen tree limb near Archer and Central in Garfield Ridge, close to Midway Airport.



A snapped power pole crashed down onto a garage while tree limbs were scattered across roofs and sidewalks.

"As soon as I came out, I saw all this mess," Garfield Ridge resident Jesus Cardenas said. "Our electricity's out. Half of my fence is out. The post is out completely, and a lot of the cables are hanging."

Storms sparked severe thunderstorm warnings in Will, LaSalle and Cook counties throughout the afternoon. Those warnings have since expired.

There was a partial roof collapse at a North Side swim school, but it was not immediately clear if the incident was weather-related.

Classes at the school were canceled for the day. Chicago Fire officials say the school will remain closed until it's given the okay to reopen.

Mowry said storm chances would likely last until sunset.



There were also chances of hail.
