Alderman Andre Vazquez, who represents the 40th Ward, said the child's mother was also injured. The Chicago Fire Department said they transported a 33-year-old pregnant woman in critical condition to a local hospital. She was stabbed, police said.
A large Chicago police presence was at the scene in the 5900 block of North Ravenswood Avenue. Officers discovered the boy around 8 a.m. with an injury to the chest, and the woman had multiple stab wounds, Chicago police said.
The boy was pronounced dead at a hospital, police said. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as Jaydone Perkins.
Police said it was a domestic-related incident.
Neighbors at the Peterson Plaza apartments were beside themselves with grief, and some of them said they heard screaming in the morning, just before police arrived.

"Screaming, just screaming," one neighbor said. "Yelling, screaming 'help,' but I didn't hear no intervening. I pray for healing. It's sad."
Residents say the 11-year-old boy was kind and playful, and they described his mother as lovely.
"11-year-old boy, very well-mannered," a neighbor said. "Spoke to me when I see him. She spoke to m. We talked... would say, 'hey, how are you doing?'"

"Him and my daughter, they play in the yard together... well-mannered child," a neighbor said.
It is a tragedy residents said they are struggling to comprehend.
"It's going to be so hard to break the news to my daughter when she comes home that she lost a friend," the neighbor said. "I'm just lost for words you guys. Speechless."
Further details on the investigation have not been released.
"I'm devastated," a neighbor said. "I live on the compound. I have a 2-year-old, 7-year-old and 11-year-old, and I just can't wrap my head around it. Like...I'm flabbergasted."
