Christopher Lopez pleaded guilty on one count of reckless homicide with a motor vehicle in the death of Glenview police officer Robert Fryc.
Last February, Lopez was accused of veering into oncoming traffic in the 200-block of South Northwest Highway, fatally hitting Officer Fryc's car.
Fryc was taken to the hospital, where he later died. He was 43 years old.
Officer Fryc had served with the Glenview Police Department since 2007.
A judge sentenced Lopez to three years at IDOC, to be served at 50%. He was given credit for the 355 days he already served, record show.
He will likely be released by the end of the year.
Officer Fryc was on his way to work at about 4 a.m. when the crash happened.
Prosecutors say Lopez admitted to having multiple drinks before driving.
