Rescued 7-year-old dies after South Shore apartment fire ID'd, medical examiner says

2 children seriously hurt, CFD says

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Our coverage of this story has moved here.

Kelly Day said she's grateful to be alive after a deadly fire tore through her South Shore apartment building early Saturday.

At least one person was killed and four others were rescued from the fire that broke out in a three-flat apartment building at 78th and Phillips, CFD said.

"My head was spinning. I had no idea what was going on," said Day.

Day said she and her husband woke up to the ring of fire alarms.

"A lot of smoke coming from the third floor all the way to the first floor," said Day. "Fire was coming through the cracks of the door."

Two children were among the rescued, including a 2-year-old boy and 7-year-old boy, police said.

At least 23 people were displaced by the fire.

Elizabeth Medina lives next to the building that caught fire.

"I just want to pray for the family involved in this," Medina. "I hope they figure out what happened."

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
