The ribbon was cut Friday for the reopening of Parkway Gardens and the new athletic field at the nearby Dulles School on Chicago's South Side.

Parkway Gardens is an affordable housing complex where first lady Michelle Obama once lived.

The playground at Dulles replaces an asphalt lot. It gives students the opportunity to have recess and sporting events outside for the first time in the school's history.

Ninety percent of the students live in Parkway Gardens.

"It's just an extension of where we are going in terms of improving education, quality of life and safety in this community," said 20th Ward Alderman Willie Cochran.

Related companies purchased the Parkway Gardens in 2011, investing $100 million in the property and upgrades.
