A shooting in Lincoln Square happened when a man tried to break into a building, Chicago police said. The incident was caught on video.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Video from a security camera at a nearby building shows a man breaking into a parked car in the alley around 10:30 p.m. Sunday in the 2600 block of West Lawrence Avenue.

A neighbor told ABC7 that same man apparently tried to break into a building there too.

A resident of the building noticed what was happening, came out on the balcony and confronted the man seen in the car. They exchange words, and the neighbor apparently fired a gun at the man as he walked away.

ABC7 froze the video before the man gets shot. Neighbor Jimmy Tran was home at the time.

"I just heard a loud bang and ran outside, and there was someone coming down the alleyway, and a bunch of yelling," Tran said.

Witnesses said the man who was seen leaving the car was shot in the leg. They said he tried to escape the neighborhood on a bike, but was unable to ride it.

"So he dropped the bike, and started running with this terrible limp down the alley," one neighbor said.

Witnesses said police responded quickly, arresting the man who was allegedly breaking into cars a block away from the scene. Neighbors said police also took the accused shooter into custody.

"I don't believe you should shoot them unless there's a danger of your life. That's what makes us a civilized society," one neighbor said.

Tran, however, believes the suspect is one of the same men who broke into his family's bakery across the street last month.

"It's a little scary out here seeing people trying to rob people in the alleyway. But, I'm glad someone got him," Tran said.
