Hot Doug's announces restaurant closing

May 6, 2014 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- A Northwest Side Chicago staple in the Avondale restaurant scene has announced it will close its doors in October.

Hot Doug's, known for specialty meats, duck fat fries and long lines to place an order, tweeted Tuesday, "My friends, we'll serve our last encased meats 10/3. We thank you for your support & suggest you don't get a Hot Doug's tattoo any time soon."

The restaurant's website lists its daily specials, including boar, alligator, and other rare meats with off-the-wall toppings like spinach raita, sun-dried tomatoes and foie gras mousse. That website casually announced, "Oh by the way, permanent vacation begins Saturday, October 4."

The restaurant, which calls itself a "sausage superstore and encased meat emporium," is located at 3324 North California. The website also announced it will be closed Monday-Wednesday of Memorial Day week.

Owner Doug Sohn published "Hot Doug's: The Book" last summer after 12 years in the business.

"To give the customers an outlet to sort of voice their stories and drawings and poems and haikus about it, and a big part of it was I wanted to get things down on paper before I completely forgot everything," Sohn told ABC7's Hungry Hound Steve Dolinsky at the time.

Sohn told Dolinsky last year he'd never open a second location, this is it.
