Cleanup continues after muddy Lollapalooza as Grant Park damage assessment gets underway

Cleanup crews continued clearing Grant Park on Monday after four days of Lollapalooza, including a rain-soaked Saturday that delayed the festival's start and left large sections of the grounds covered in mud.

Cleanup crews continued clearing Grant Park on Monday after four days of Lollapalooza.

Crews spent the day hauling away equipment, trash and fencing after hundreds of thousands of fans attended the music festival. The Chicago Park District is now assessing the condition of the park to determine the extent of any damage caused by the event.

Heavy rain on Saturday created muddy conditions throughout the festival grounds, but many attendees said the weather did little to diminish their experience.

"I really enjoyed it. I flew from Poland to see Tate McRae in Lollapalooza and it was amazing," said first-time attendee Oliwia Tokarzewska.

The 21-year-old traveled alone from Poland for her first Lollapalooza and her first visit to the United States. She also took part in the festival's traditional barricade run in hopes of securing a front-row spot.

"It was weird. My shoes are still covered in mud; I need to clean it, but I made it," Tokarzewska said.

The Chicago Park District will evaluate the condition of Grant Park before determining the cost of repairs. According to a park district spokesperson, "Based on the assessment, a cost for repairing and restoring the Festival Area to its pre-Festival condition will be determined and C3 Presents will be financially responsible for all reasonable costs related to repairing and restoring the Festival Area."

Potential restoration work could include re-sodding, replanting and other landscaping. A waterlogged festival in 2011 cost more than $1 million.

For first-time attendee Payton Sizemore, arriving later on Saturday helped avoid the worst of the weather, though not the muddy conditions.

"We went in a little bit later that day and still got to see the set that we wanted to see, but the mud was tricky. The shoes took a real beating," Sizemore said.

The muddy conditions also became part of the festival experience, with some attendees taking part in friendly mud wrestling as other fans cheered.

"I didn't see it in-person but I kind of wish I did," first-time attendee Arianna Tway said.

The dates and performers for next year's Lollapalooza have not been announced.
