MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. -- One person was bitten multiple times by a shark at Manhattan Beach on Saturday, city officials said.

The incident occurred at the end of the pier around 9:20 a.m., the city said.

According to Rick Flores with L.A. County Fire, a fisherman standing on the pier had a great white shark hooked on his line. He spent 30 to 40 minutes trying to reel it in.

At the time the shark struggling, a group of long-distance swimmers came by. The victim was bitten in the upper-right torso.

Paramedics treated the victim on-scene. The victim was then taken to the hospital. The wound is moderate and the victim is breathing on his own, Flores said.

The shark swam off. Helicopters and lifeguards are searching for the shark.

A stretch of water from Hermosa Beach to the Manhattan Beach pier will be closed for up to three hours, Flores said.
