Fox River Grove bus-train crash remembered 20 years later
FOX RIVER GROVE, Ill. (WLS) -- Family and friends are gathering Sunday to mark the 20th anniversary of a horrific crash involving a school bus and a Metra train in Fox River Grove.
Seven students were killed and dozens others were injured in the crash, which occurred when the school bus was stopped at a traffic light at Algonquin Road on Oct. 25, 1995. The back of the school bus extended onto a portion of the railroad tracks and was struck by a Metra train.
The accident is one of the worst in Metra's history.
Fox River Grove Deputy Fire Chief Jim Kreher was the first on the scene at the time of the crash.
"I think it's a healing process, I think it's a way for us to remember the kids, what happened that day, and a way to see each other. You know, we're going to be there each year at that time," Kreher said.
Improved signaling was installed as a result of the crash.
