3 Chicagoans allegedly hurt while protesting outside Broadview ICE facility file claims against DHS

BROADVIEW, Ill. (WLS) -- Three Chicagoans have filed claims against the Department of Homeland Security.

They say they were injured while protesting outside the Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in Broadview in September.

DHS called the lawsuit "shameless," saying "DHS officers acted within their legal authority, and no amount of manufactured outrage can rewrite the facts. DHS will not apologize for enforcing the nation's immigration laws, nor will we be intimidated by meritless lawsuits designed to score political points and generate headlines. We look forward to defeating these claims in court."

DHS went on to say, "ICE and CBP are trained to use the minimum amount of force necessary to resolve dangerous situations to prioritize the safety of the public and themselves. Our officers are highly trained in de-escalation tactics and defensive driving. They regularly receive ongoing use of force training. Additionally, many of our agents have backgrounds in the military or local law enforcement and Border Patrol agents receive extensive federal law enforcement training, at FLETC training centers, just as ICE officers do."
