Alleged serial Loop puncher ordered detained; victim speaks out

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A man accused of punching several women recently in Chicago's Loop appeared in court Wednesday.

Some argue 40-year-old Marlon Miller should have never been on the streets.

And one of the women attacked said the impact of the crime lingers.

A suburban grandmother said she tried to take her normal commute into downtown.

"It was really bad for me. I'm trying to hold it together, but it's hard," Sherri Bester said.

Last Wednesday morning, as Bester walked from her train to work, she says she was unexpectedly verbally and physically assaulted.

"There was no reason to draw attention to him; he wasn't doing anything. But when he crossed my path, he just did what he did," Bester said.

Marlon Miller is charged in the assault.

A judge ordered he remain in custody Wednesday.

Previously, Miller was ordered to have a health evaluation while in custody.

"I'm happy that he will remain detained, and he won't be able to harm anyone else being that this wasn't his first incident," Bester said.

Miller is also accused of attacking two other women in the Loop on Wednesday.

Miller is accused of throwing a milkshake at a woman near the Chicago Theatre last month and punching two women in the face on Lake Street in October. After that incident, a judge placed him on electronic monitoring.

Bester was in court with her husband. She says it was the first time she'd seen Miller since last week.

"I was just tensing up just to see him again, but I wanted to be here because I felt like my presence needed to be here to show the judicial system you need to do something about it," Bester said. "I just want to make sure that do what they do to get him help and show him that you can't continue to do thing to people so other people can feel safer."

Bester says she is seeing her doctor Thursday.

She says her eye is still swollen.

Miller is due back in court Jan. 2.
