Labor Day weekend travelers to hit the road amid high gas prices in Chicago area

CHICAGO (WLS) -- If you're driving to your Labor Day destination, prepare to pay more money at the pump.

Gasbuddy is predicting that drivers will pay approximately 87 cents more per gallon compared to last year.

The reason for higher gas prices, says GasBuddy is to due to ongoing geopolitical tension that has disrupted the global oil markets.

The latest gas prices according to Triple A:
US: $4.14
Illinois: $4.30
Chicago: $4.69
Indiana: $3.44

Drivers are expected to pay for record high gas prices this busy travel weekend.

"The most expensive Labor Day that we're going to see is this year. So a lot of Americans hitting the roads and seeing rising prices," Patrick De Haan of GasBuddy said.

Over in Indiana Governor Mike Braun is extending the state's gas tax holiday by another month. He said it's necessary, due to continued global oil shipping disruptions. It now runs until October 5.
