CHICAGO (WLS) -- The Chicago anti-violence volunteer who was facing weapons charges after turning a gun in to police has reached a plea deal with prosecutors.
Nakia Smith says the gun he turned in back in 2023 was taken off the streets, and he thought he was doing the right thing.
But Smith is a convicted felon and cannot legally possess a gun.
As part of the deal with prosecutors, Smith pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a weapon without a concealed carry license.
He was sentenced to a year in prison, with credit for his time served.
