Man kills 1 in beating caught on video, carjacks grandma's SUV: CPD

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A suspect with a lengthy criminal record allegedly killed a man in a brutal beating caught on video before carjacking a grandmother's SUV on the city's South Side on Monday night, according to law enforcement and police documents.

Surveillance camera footage from the scene shows two people standing at a CTA bus stop near 95th and Halsted.

The video shows the 76-year-old victim hitting the 32-year-old suspect, but there is no audio, and it is unclear what led up to that point. The man then punches the victim and shoves him to the ground.

ABC7 paused the video there because it is too disturbing. But the suspect goes on to beat and kick the victim multiple times, before eventually walking away.

Chicago police responded to the area around 9:15 p.m. and found the victim on the ground with apparent trauma to the head

The 76-year-old man was taken to Advocate Christ Hospital and later died.

Ald. Ronnie Mosley, who represents the 21st Ward, where the attack took place, called it a "heartbreaking and senseless act of violence," adding that there are mental health resources available in his community.

According to a police report obtained by the ABC7 I-Team, that same suspect then carjacked an SUV from a nearby McDonald's.

A 60-year-old grandmother says she was inside the restaurant when the man got inside her vehicle while her grandkids, a 3-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy, were in the backseat, and threatened to shoot them.

According to the police report, the man took off in the stolen green Kia Telluride.

What we know about the suspect

The suspect was taken into custody in Indiana after the stolen SUV's owner tracked it through her granddaughter's iPad left inside.

The owner of that SUV told ABC7 she tracked its location through the little girl's iPad left inside.

The crime spree came to a crashing end when the stolen Kia Telluride crashed in Schererville, Indiana and police arrested the driver.

He is now locked in custody in Indiana, and the I-Team has learned that 32-year-old driver has a lengthy criminal record spanning nearly two decades.

ABC7 is not naming the driver because he is not yet been charged with a crime in this case.

A 2019 case in Cook County charges the man with robbery and aggravated battery.

Court documents show that prosecutors say he repeatedly hit a man and then stole his bike in south suburban Glenwood.

He also pleaded guilty and served jail time for a 2015 robbery in Matteson and was charged with resisting arrest in 2010.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
