West Side gyro restaurant damaged as smash-and-grab thieves attempt to steal ATM, Chicago police say

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A West Side restaurant was left heavily damaged after thieves smashed the front glass and tried to steal an ATM, Chicago police said.

Surveillance video showed the intruders using a white SUV to break in Saturday morning.

The crime happened around 5:15 a.m. at Star Gyros in the 3400 block of West Roosevelt Road, near Homan Square and North Lawndale, police said.

The owner of the business says the shop was closed, but workers were inside when the break-in happened.

No injuries were reported.

The restaurant's ATM was left behind at the scene as multiple offenders fled in a white SUV.

Chicago police are investigating.
