CHICAGO (WLS) -- A Chicago firefighter and another person were injured Sunday night after a fire broke out at a West Side church and spread to another building, CFD officials told ABC7.
The fire happened at North Lotus Avenue and West Huron Street in the Austin neighborhood, officials said.
There were still several firefighters on the scene late Sunday night, and the fire was contained.
he flames were so intense firefighters had to go into defensive mode, meaning fighting from the outside.
At one point, one firefighter fell through the floor of one of the buildings, but he was able to get out and get to help and is expected to be okay after being taken to Stroger Hospital, CFD officials said.
Another civilian was also treated for minor injuries that were unrelated to the fire.
Chicago fire officials said more firefighters were called to the scene due to the cold weather. At one point, one of the hydrants froze. That was just one of many challenges these firefighter faced in battling the flames
