4 in custody after homeless man fatally stabbed in the Loop: officials

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Four people are in custody after a man experiencing homelessness was stabbed to death outside of a downtown restaurant on Sunday morning, officials said.

Chicago police said the man was found unresponsive in the Loop's 200-block of South Wabash Avenue around 7:20 a.m. Sunday. What led up to the stabbing was not immediately clear.

The victim, who suffered an apparent puncture wound to his body, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. His identity was not immediately released.

On Monday, police confirmed that charges are pending. Police originally took six people into custody, but two were released without charges.

Cook County Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information that leads to an arrest.

"This is a senseless loss of life," Cook County Crime Stoppers Executive Director Paul Rutherford said in part. "We are deeply committed to supporting law enforcement and the community in bringing justice for this individual."
