6 wounded, 2 critically, after gunfire erupts at large gathering in Humboldt Park: police

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Detectives are investigating an overnight mass shooting in Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood that left six people wounded, including two men who were critically injured.

Police were called to the 900-block of North Central Park Avenue just after 2 a.m. Sunday.

According to police dispatch traffic, callers reported dozens of shots fired and multiple victims.

"Shots fired, 900-block of North Central Park.... Caller says 30 shots fired... Caller says male neighbor shot on the porch... Male and a female shot after a drive by shooting," a dispatcher said.

As officers responded, additional victims were reported.

"We're getting another call of a person shot 918 North Central... Caller says there's a person on the ground shot," according to dispatch traffic.

One victim arrived at a hospital on their own.

"We got a walk-in person shot at Humboldt Park Health... Victim says he was shot at Central Park and Augusta," a dispatcher said.

Neighbors said a party attended by more than 100 people had been taking place on the block last night and appeared peaceful.

"They were sitting on their cars, just playing music. It was, like I say, summertime in Chicago, so it wasn't, it didn't seem like it was going to be a problem. But again, that element is always around," he said.

Police said at least six people suffered injuries:

• A 35-year-old man was shot multiple times and transported to Illinois Masonic Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.


• A 33-year-old man was shot in the finger and transported to Humboldt Park Health, where he was listed in good condition.


• A 39-year-old man was shot in the thigh and transported to Stroger Hospital, where he was listed in good condition.


• A 46-year-old woman was shot in the back and foot and transported to Stroger Hospital, where she was listed in good condition.


• A 34-year-old woman was shot in the hip and transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where she was listed in good condition.


• A 36-year-old man was shot multiple times and transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

In the aftermath of the shooting, Habilitative Systems Inc., or HSI, is coordinating mental health support for victims and community members affected by the violence.

"It's important that it happens fast because we know that people are impacted immediately, and we don't want folks to live in a crisis state," said Chaundra VanDyk, HSI's program director of special initiatives.

VanDyk said incidents like the shooting can have lasting emotional effects on residents.

"This may re-traumatize some people and bring about some things that they experienced in the past or create new experiences in the present that may not be positive. So, we want to help people work through some of that unhealed trauma while healing what has happened in the moment," she said.

The investigation remains ongoing. Chicago police said there is currently no information to share publicly about what happened or who may be responsible.
