Man charged in Albany Park standoff that left CPD officer wounded detained pending trial

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A man was charged in connection with a standoff that left a Chicago police officer wounded earlier this week, police said Wednesday.

Daniel Aguirre, 42, has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated battery, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated assault of a peace officer and aggravated discharge of a firearm in an occupied building in the incident.

Aguirre appeared at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse Wednesday.

On Monday, police were responding to a domestic incident in the Albany Park neighborhood at Springfield and Leland avenues.

Prosecutors say Aguirre had grown increasingly paranoid the past few months, with a violent outburst happening Monday morning in his Albany Park apartment.

They say Aguirre accused his girlfriend of cheating and that when she tried to force him to leave their apartment, he allegedly began beating both her and their 14-year-old daughter, referred to in court as victim one and victim two.

Prosecutors say the mother of Aguirre's girlfriend lived downstairs and knocked on the door to help. That's when prosecutors say Aguirre fired shots at the door, with a bullet striking the 67-year-old woman in the face.

They say Aguirre then turned on the burners of the stove, pacing back and forth.

Other relatives called police, who responded and helped get the 67-year-old critically injured gunshot victim out of the building.

Prosecutors say Aguirre held his girlfriend and daughter at gunpoint, with SWAT officers on the scene.

When they tried to breach the apartment, prosecutors say Aguirre fired at the door again, with one officer getting shot in the abdomen.

The officer was expected to make a full recovery.

Prosecutors say a Chicago police sergeant convinced Aguirre to release his daughter, who was seen with bruises, but not before he made a threat.

Prosecutors say Aguirre then let his girlfriend go and also gave himself up.

The woman and girl were battered and taken to Stroger Hospital but expected to be OK.

Officials say a search of the apartment found multiple weapons.

A judge ruled Aguirre a threat to the community, ordering him detained until his trial.

Prosecutors said both the wounded SWAT officer and the 67yearold woman remain stable. Aguirre is scheduled to return to court on Aug. 12.
