Child drowns in Lake Michigan near Michigan City

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (WLS) -- A child has drowned in Lake Michigan near Michigan City, Indiana, police said.

First responders said they were alerted to a person struggling in the water off Lake Shore and Shawmut drive near Michigan City's Beachwalk area at about 1:50 p.m. Monday.

The person was located in the water and rushed to a hospital where they were pronounced dead.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is investigating the incident.
