Emergency crews suspend search in Lake Michigan after mayday call near Indiana Dunes

PORTER, Ind. (WLS) -- Emergency crews suspended their search in Lake Michigan for a vessel that was heard making a mayday call, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources said Thursday evening.

The search is focused about 2 miles northwest of Indiana Dunes State Park after the call came in from a marine radio, the IDNR said.

No contact has been made since the original mayday call was broadcast.

"The US Coast Guard received a single Mayday call from a marine radio. We responded to the area by boat and shore," the IDNR said in an update Thursday evening. "We were assisted in the area searching by the US Coast guard boat and helicopter, Porter County Marine Unit, US National Park Units on a boat, Porter Fire Department, and multiple other agencies responded by land. After several hours we all located no vessels in distress and there were no signs of anything out of the ordinary, as well as no additional mayday calls."

Indiana Conservation officers, the United States Coast Guard, Indiana Dunes National Park Rangers, the Porter Fire Department and the Portage Fire Department were searching the water, while others searched from the shore.
