Driver in custody after 2 teen girls on bikes killed in hit-and-run in Cranford

CRANFORD, N.J. -- Two teen girls riding their bikes are dead after being struck by a vehicle in an apparent hit-and-run crash in Cranford, New Jersey, on Monday night.

The two girls were hit around 5:30 p.m. Both victims died overnight.

Two women who say they work with the mother of one of the victims said both girls were 17 years old.

They said the suspect is also 17, and this was a case of stalking. The women said both the school and police were notified for the last three months.

The alleged suspect left the scene, but was later found and taken into custody.

Authorities have not released details about the driver or whether the collision was an accident or intentional.

ABC New York City affiliate WABC's helicopter captured a huge crime scene as police investigated the crash.

It is believed the victims were either heading to school for an event or were heading home after the event when they were killed.

In the typically quiet residential neighborhood in Cranford, neighbors huddled together, horrified by what happened. Witnesses described the moments after the crash.

"At first, I thought it was a shooting because I saw people going in every direction," neighbor Cathy Donlin said.

Those who live in the area described the sounds of screeching tires, and said speeding is a major issue there.

"And then it sounded like a car crash; people are going way too fast down the street, and it's really scary," neighbor Clare Garambone said.

WABC reached out to both police and the Union County Prosecutor's Office for more information but has not heard back as the investigation continues.
