Daily Herald: Home healthcare

WHEATON, Ill. (WLS) -- Told through the eyes of a Wheaton couple married 67 years and the doctor who regularly comes to their home to care for them, Jessica Cilella tells the story of how such house calls might become much more routine again in the upcoming years.

There are several reasons for this: changes brought on by the Affordable Care Act; the financial crisis in Medicare and Medicaid; increasingly advanced and portable medical technology that can be brought into the home; and a rapidly aging population.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the population of people age 85 and older is expected to more than triple between 2012 and 2060, to more than 18 million people.
