Pilsen Mexican Independence Day parade announced despite immigration crackdown

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Organizers say the 2025 Pilsen Mexican Independence Day parade will go on next month despite fear among the community due to ongoing immigration enforcement.

Organizers said this year will be no different, adding that this year's parade is not only a celebration of heritage, but also a statement of resilience.

"We're here to let people know that we are not going to be stopping from celebrating our roots, our heritage, our culture," said activist Vicky Lugo. "We do have a contingency plan that we are going to have volunteers through the parade route to help secure areas and also if they see any immigration agents we're going to be communicating."

Organizers are also keeping in mind the possibility of the National Guard in Chicago.

President Trump has repeatedly suggested he's considering deploying troops.

"That is not an issue that we are scared of or that we fear simply because our parade is not an act of violence or aggression or anything to disrupt the peace. We are just celebrating our traditions," Lugo said.

The Mexican Independence Day Parade in Pilsen will take place Saturday, September 6 at noon down 18th Street.
