The shooting happened on Saturday after 7 p.m. near 160th Place and Drexel Avenue, South Holland officials said.

When officers arrived to the scene, a 16-year-old boy was on the lawn.

He was taken to an area hospital, where he died.

He was identified as Davell Holden, 16, of South Holland by the medical examiner.

It is unknown if anybody was taken into custody.

Friends, family and classmates are mourning the student-athlete.

Administrators from Thornwood High School describe Holden as a rising junior scholar-athlete, who was a valued member of the school's basketball team.

"I couldn't believe it when it first heard it to be honest. I said, 'no, that's not true. That's not Davell,'" former basketball coach Joseph Ingram said.

Thornwood's principal shared the news with the school community, saying in part, "I encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect on the impact Davell had on our lives and to hold his family close in your hearts."

Details surrounding the shooting remain unclear.

The news is unbelievable for those who knew the beloved teen.

"I still don't really know what happened; I just know he left here, went over there, and I got a phone call, tragic phone call about him being shot, something that I could never have imagined," mother Angela Birts said. "Everyone is honoring my son, knowing that great young man. I'm sorry that I only got 16 years, but I am grateful for those 16 years."

Holden's focus and passion was basketball.

"He didn't hurt nobody. He didn't speak bad about nobody. He didn't care about anything that was going on at school, nothing negative," aunt Ashley Birts said.

"It's hard on our family. It hurts so bad. It's always the innocent ones; I miss him," aunt Stacey Gayles said.

Anyone with information is urged to call police.
