Donors at Brookfield Zoo Chicago blood drive Wednesday get free admission amid supply crisis

BROOKFIELD, Ill. (WLS) -- The Brookfield Zoo Chicago is hoping to make a dent in the Red Cross blood crisis.

Donations are way down this summer, for several reasons.

The zoo Wednesday is offering free tickets and parking, to those who donate.

There's been a steady stream of people, helping out in a time of need.

It's only the second time in history The Red Cross has declared a national blood crisis.

For some blood supply levels, including O blood, they're down to a one-day supply.

Blood donations have fallen to a four-year summer low, the Red Cross says. And despite thousands of people stepping up to help, donations are still not keeping pace with hospital demand.

Doctors could soon have to make decisions about who gets blood and maybe put off some elective surgeries.

That's why they're urging eligible donors to act immediately.

All pre-registered donors Wednesday will receive free admission to the zoo for one adult and up to two children.

And for the month of August, the Red Cross is giving a $20 Amazon gift card to anyone who makes a donation.

The blood drive runs until 3 p.m.
