Person dies after boat hits breakwall, sinks near Hammond Marina, officials say

HAMMOND, Ind. (WLS) -- A person died after boat hit a breakwall and sank in northwest Indiana.

The incident happened around 11:34 p.m. on Lake Michigan near the Hammond Marina in Hammond, Indiana, officials said.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources confirmed to ABC7 the boat, which was coming from Illinois, struck a submerged breakwall near the marina entrance before it sank.

Six people on the boat the boat were rescued from the water, and one person died, the Indiana DNR confirmed.

No further information about the boat crash was available.
