
HOMER GLEN, Ill. (WLS) -- A woman died after being struck by a hit-and-run driver in the south suburbs on Friday evening, officials said.
The Will County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to 159th Avenue between Gougar and Cedar roads in Homer Glen just after 6 p.m.
A driver was heading eastbound on 159th Avenue when they hit a dog that was in the road, the sheriff's office said.
The sheriff's office said the driver stopped and found an injured woman, who appeared to have been hit by another who driver who did not stop, in the roadway.
The driver who stopped and another passerby rendered aid to the woman, but she later died at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox.
The Will County Coroner's Office identified her as 65-year-old Louise M. Vieni, of Lockport. Autopsy results were not immediately released.
Sheriff's officers said the dog also died.
The roadway was temporarily shut down on Friday night.
The sheriff's office is investigating. Authorities did not immediately provide further information.
