Passenger killed after driver runs red light, crashes into semi in Joliet, police say

JOLIET, Ill. (WLS) -- A passenger was killed after a driver ran a red light and crashed into a semi early Saturday in Joliet, officials said.

The crash happened around 2:46 a.m. at Channahon Road and Houbolt Road, Joliet police said.

A Mercury Grand Marquis driven by a 20-year-old Joliet man with a 21-year-old Joliet man as a passenger was traveling Channahon Road when the driver ran a red traffic light, police said. The vehicle crashed into a semi, driven by a 68-year-old Palos Park man, that was traveling on Houbolt Road with a green traffic light.

The 20-year-old driver was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.

The 21-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. His identify has not been released.

The driver of the semi was not injured.

Joliet police and the Will County Coroner's Office continue to investigate the fatal crash.
