2 charged in connection with school resource officer's missing gun

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (WLS) -- Two people have been charged in connection with a north suburban school resource officer's gun that went missing earlier this week.

Arlington Heights police said a school resource officer working at Forest View Educational Center took the gun off while using the restroom Monday and realized it was gone shortly after students had already left for the day.

Classes were canceled at the school Tuesday out of an abundance of caution.

Juan Pablo Sanchez Jaramillo, 18, a student at the school from Mount Prospect, took the gun from the bathroom, Arlington Heights police said.

He gave it to a 17-year-old in a nearby town, police said.

Police found a flashlight that had been mounted to the gun, but the gun remains missing, police said.

The 17-year-old was arrested and taken to the Arlington Heights Police Department.

The teen was charged with possession of a stolen firearm, unlawful possession of a weapon in a school and theft of a lost or mislaid property.

Sanchez Jaramillo has been charged with unlawful possession of a weapon in a school, police said.

He is also in custody and due in court Thursday.

"The Police Department strongly believes there are individuals with information as to the whereabouts of the stolen handgun. We encourage anyone with information to contact the Arlington Heights Police or your local police department," police said.
