Kankakee resident shoots suspect with suspect's own shotgun during attempted break-in: police

KANKAKEE, Ill. (WLS) -- A resident of a Kankakee apartment building shot and killed an intruder with the suspect's shotgun Sunday, police said.

The shooting took place at about 5:51 p.m. in the 1200-block of East Oak Street.

Kankakee officers arrived on the scene and found Travis Hayes, 35, of Kankakee with a gunshot wound, police said. He was transported to a hospital, where he later died.

Police said a 47-year-old resident reported that Hayes and another suspect attempted to break into his apartment and that Hayes had a shotgun.

The resident told police that there was a physical altercation and the resident fired the shotgun, hitting Hayes.

The incident remains under investigation.
