Three of the adults were in critical condition, while one adult remained stable, officials said. The four children also remained stable.

It happened about 1 a.m. May 6 in the 1200-block of Harding Avenue in Des Plaines.

Firefighters used ladders to move floor-to-floor over fears the building could become unstable.

Clifford Law says it has filed three lawsuits on behalf of the victims.

They claim negligence on the part of NICOR and the building management company.

Residents smelled gas the day before the fire, police say.

Neither NICOR nor the management company immediately responded to requests for comment.
