Congressman Danny Davis to not seek reelection, endorses LaShawn Ford

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Congressman Danny Davis announce he will not seek reelection on Thursday morning.

The 83-year-old made the announcement surrounded by family.

Davis also endorsed State Representative LaShawn Ford for his 7th Congressional District Seat.

He was elected to represent the 7th Congressional District of Illinois in Congress on November 5, 1996.

Davis also served on the Cook County Board of Commissioners and as a member of the Chicago City Council as Alderman of the 29th Ward.

Davis, known for his deep baritone voice and walking stick, has been a champion of civil rights, affordable housing and health care, and reforms to help those returning to society after serving time in prison.

He is one of the most senior members of the House of Representatives.

Davis will serve out his term, which ends in January 2027.

Former Cook County Commissioner and Davis staffer Richard Boykin, has already filed paperwork to run for the seat.

Chicago City Treasurer Melissa Conyears-Ervin and Jason Friedman announced their bid on Thursday shortly after Davis' announcement.

Forest Park Mayor Rory Hoskins said he wil also seek the Democratic nomination for the seat.
