ITASCA, Ill. (WLS) -- A lost dog in California was found more than a thousand miles away in a Chicago suburb.
Itasca police took a stray dog to the DuPage County Animal Services shelter.
Animal caretakers scanned the pup and found that he was from California thanks to his microchip
Officials made a phone call and turns out the dog's name is Opie.
Opie went missing in California in July. However, she said since he was microchipped, she never gave up on the chance of getting that call.
"We'll never know exactly how Opie made his way nearly across the country, but we do know this: microchips work," a spokesperson with DuPage County Animal Services said.
Opie is back on the west coast with his owner.
