Wisconsin officials clear protest encampment at site of deadly Madison police shooting, fire sparked

MADISON, Wis. -- The city of Madison, Wisconsin cleared out a protest encampment at the site of a recent deadly police shooting.

Trucks and state patrol officers arrived at the intersection early Tuesday morning as demonstrators tried to block the area.

Some allegedly started fires with memorial candles.

But crews put them out.

The site is where a Madison police officer shot and killed 38-year-old Corey Ruiz last month.

Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway says the Wisconsin Department of Justice Criminal Investigation is conducting an independent investigation into Ruiz's death.

She says the Madison Police Department can't make any recommendations on charges in the case and that decision is up to the Wisconsin Department of Justice and local district attorney.

Rhodes-Conway said the demonstration at the intersection was no longer safe or sustainable.
