Chemical leak prompts reports of rotten egg smell in south suburbs

FRANKFORT, Ill. (WLS) -- A reported gas smell across the south suburbs is now being linked to a chemical spill in University Park.

Crews were called to Frankfort after the odor spread, with reports also made in Tinley Park on Monday.

Fire officials say they left the scene once Nicor Gas arrived.

They later learned it was not a gas issue, but a chemical leak of mercaptan, which is added to natural gas to give it the rotten egg smell.

Nicor said it has received more than 500 calls and will go out and investigate each one to make sure it is not a gas leak. Nicor says to continue to call, so they can investigate.

No evacuations were ordered. Nicor gas said the chemical is not dangerous.
