Large, heavy power line piece nearly hit 3 in Montgomery home: woman

MONTGOMERY, Ill. (WLS) -- One woman says a windstorm in Montgomery caused a piece of a power line to rip through her house.

She says the part just missed her while she and others were in the living room.

Maggie Green says a large disc sliced through her roof.

Because of its weight, the wind that night and the height of the power line, she says it could have killed her.

"The cap sliced through my house like a circular saw blade," Green said.

Green, a hairstylist, says she was standing in her living room getting ready to put pink highlights on her friend's 10-year-old daughter when the disc flew from her backyard power line, slicing through her roof. They thought it was tornado.

"We sat, like, sat in the bathtub, and we were just waiting," Green said.

When they came out, they realized there was no tornado, just the disc, that had missed them by inches.

"We would have just like, not been injured, just like chopped. And the only thing worse than being chopped would be like to watch someone else be chopped," Green said.

Still traumatized, she says the stress still makes her physically sick. On Aug. 16, the disc went past her, hitting the table, the dresser and then the floor.

"This corner of the wall stopped it," Green said. "Yeah, her mom was right there. So, it was like a miracle."

She's counting her blessings, as she tries to emphasize the weight of the nearly 35-inch-long item.

Green said this could've gone drastically different.

"It's insane. It's like 'Final Destination,'" Green said.

She says, while her landlord patched up the roof, and firefighters came to make sure the house was safe, she has yet to hear from ComEd. With houses surrounded by several power lines, safety remains her biggest concern.

"If a windstorm made that fall off and almost kill us, then imagine the next storm. What's going to happen?" Green said.

ComEd did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
