It stars real-life husband and wife Megan Mullally and Chicago-area native Nick Offerman.

"Megan and I have often said wouldn't it be great if we could find a show together to come back to the Chicago stage," Offerman said.

In the musical an actress in the 1930's adopts a 40,000-year-old neanderthal frozen in a block of ice.

Once he thaws, all bets are off! Offerman stars as the acclaimed playwright Eugene O'Neill.

"There's vaudeville, there's sort of an infectious stupidity to the show, it's like Laurel and Hardy or the Marx Brothers, a Mel Brooks movie," Offerman said.

"I feel myself choking up every night, because the music is so beautiful. Human emotion is such a funny thing, it can move us, even in the most ridiculous of circumstances," he said.

He said that when he first started his career, casting directors said his Chicago roots stood out.

"When I got to L.A. some of the first jobs I got were on "ER" and "The West Wing," and those casting directors would say, 'I look for you people coming from Chicago, because you have this work ethic. You don't do theatre in Chicago because you're cute or you're gonna be a Disney singer.'"

He grew up just outside Joliet and graduated from the University of Illinois.

During his years as a struggling actor in Chicago, he made a living with his expert carpentry skills.

"Iceboy!" runs at the Goodman Theater through August 16.
