North Chicago police said they responded to the scene about 12:50 a.m. and found a 27-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the chest. Officers began life-saving measures. He was taken to a local hospital and was listed in critical condition.

Before police arrived, the suspect drove away in a black SUV, police said.

Police did not immediately provide his condition.

Police said one person has been charged with attempted murder, but did not immediately provide the person's name.

It is believed this was a targeted shooting, and the North Chicago Police Department is working with the Lake County State's Attorney's Office regarding possible charges, police said.
