Man captured after escaping ICE custody, hiding in NW Indiana marsh area for hours: police

PORTER COUNTY, Ind. (WLS) -- A man has been captured after escaping from Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody on a northwest Indiana interstate and hiding in a marsh area for hours on Tuesday, police said.

Indiana State Police it all started after they transferred custody of the man on Tuesday afternoon to an ICE officer, who was taking him to a holding facility for processing.

ISP said the ICE officer and the suspect were heading westbound on Interstate 94 when the suspect freed himself from his restraints and jumped from the moving vehicle near Exit 22 in Burns Harbor.

The suspect then fled across the interstate and into a brush line, ISP said.

Chopper 7 was over the scene as ISP troopers and local law enforcement officers searched the area.

ISP said the suspect was eventually spotted near a marsh area. He was cold and wet after hiding in the water for nearly five hours.

The suspect was taken into custody. Additional information was not immediately available.
