Notre Dame offensive lineman Matty Augustine, who was competing for a starting job this summer, and cornerback Chaz Smithare both set to undergo surgery to repair injuries sustained in camp.
Augustine (toe) and Smith (wrist) both are expected to return during the season, according to the team. The 6-foot-7, 315-pound Augustine, a native of Connecticut, had been in the mix to start at right guard, where Sullivan Absher is also competing. Smith is a 6-foot-1, 180-pound freshman from Tennessee who came to Notre Dame as a three-star recruit.
Notre Dame has depth at both positions, especially cornerback with All-America selection Leonard Moore and others returning. The team is hoping to regain offensive lineman Charles Jagusah, who fractured his arm last summer in a UTV accident.
The Irish open the season Sept. 6 against Wisconsin at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
