Delta flight 2879 was scheduled to leave Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport for Chicago's O'Hare airport on Monday.

However, the flight was further delayed because of a ground stop at O'Hare due to thunderstorms, Delta Airlines said.

Thomas W. Ryan, the alleged unruly passenger, became agitated and eventually tried to open a cabin door.

Ryan was allegedly able to get the door partially open, but the slide never deployed.

The pilots brought the plane back to the gate and the passenger was removed.

"We have a situation with a passenger. It's not going to be pretty," the pilot was heard saying in a recording from ATC.com.

The door of the Boeing 737-900 was inspected by maintenance and the flight departed later that night.
