ST JOSEPH, Mich. -- Drone footage captured adults and children venturing out onto a slippery ice shelf on Lake Michigan's southern shore on January 3, despite annual warnings from officials that shelf ice is unstable and dangerous.
Video filmed by Timeless Aerial Photography in St Joseph, Michigan, shows a man almost falling on the shelf before rushing back towards his group for safety, and a small child slipping while walking over the ice alongside an adult.
The National Parks Service (NPS) says that while "shelf ice is gorgeous to observe and may appear solid," it is "inherently unstable" and may not be able to support a person's weight.

"Sudden shifting and breaking of the ice make it especially hazardous," the NPS warns. "Never step onto shelf ice."
Speaking to WSBT, Steve Neubecker, Director of Public Safety City of St Joseph, urged people to "stay on ground" and don't "risk losing your life" for a photo opportunity.
