The child, a 2-year-old boy, suffered a gunshot wound to the head. He was transported in critical condition to Comer Children's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Video showed evidence technicians at the scene, where officers took a 31-year-old man into custody.

Community activists who responded to scene say they hope these tragedies serve as a reminder for parents and caregivers to do better, and those who have a firearm need to make sure it's secure around children.

"We could talk about the lessons and things that we all have to learn from this, but the tragedy I think at this point, and the pain the family's feeling, and the pain that we all should feel for this child who was just beginning," Pastor Donovan Price. "We can't keep losing our babies because of some adult things, and so, whether it's gun locks or gun safety kits, or whatever the case may be, or just plain paying attention, we got to be proactive or pray active."

There was no further information about possible charges for the suspect in custody, nor have police said what his relationship is to the toddler.

Area Two detectives are investigating. Police did not immediately provide further information.
